Discourses by Latter-day Saint Women Available in Spanish and Portuguese

Speeches by Latter-day Saint women from 1831 to 2016 are now available in Spanish and Portuguese online. The book “At the Pulpit: 185 Years of Discourses by Latter-day Saint Women” was first published in English in early 2017. This is the first non-English publication by the Church Historian’s Press, an imprint of the Church History Department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Spanish is the second-most spoken language (after English) throughout the world among Latter-day Saints, followed by Portuguese. The release of this book in Spanish and Portuguese will expand the opportunity to learn from unique Latter-day Saint women to millions more members throughout the world.

Latter-day Saint women have played key roles in teaching and leading throughout the history of the Church. The book captures the wisdom, experience and insight from courageous women around the world of various backgrounds and ethnicities. 

Church historians Jennifer Reeder and Kate Holbrook edited the book and worked together to gather doctrinally based discourses that give rich insight to the contributions Latter-day Saint women have given to society and the Church.

"Readers of this volume will be inspired by the way women have captured their beliefs and their understanding of Latter-day Saint doctrine,” says Reeder. 

Reeder also says, “They will see the various ways in which women have spoken, whether that be in a discussion with a Relief Society group, or whether that is at a pulpit, or whether it is an address through a newspaper. … Women had the opportunity to address other women and to address the larger population, to expound and exhort the truth.”

Holbrook adds, “The 53 discourses in this volume can transform the way we see ourselves as Latter-day Saints, can expand the vision we have of how to be good and how to contribute to the world.”

The historic and contemporary speeches in the book can be found translated, in their entirety, online and in the LDS Gospel Library app in the “Church History” section at no cost. The 22 original audio recordings of the discourses have not yet been translated into Spanish and Portuguese, but a recording of one speech originally given in Spanish is available for listening online.
