“The Elko Nevada Temple will stand as a beacon, a place of peace and devotion and a source of pride for the community and our state,” said Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo, who, along with local government leaders and journalists, visited the Church’s new house of the Lord during media day, Wednesday, August 27, 2025.
“This temple is not only a sacred space for the thousands of Latter-day Saints who call northeastern Nevada home, but also a symbol of the values that bind our communities together through faith, family and service,” said Governor Lombardo.
“From the design to the artwork, it reflects respect for both faith and community,” the governor added. “It reminds us that while the government plays a role in providing opportunity and safety, it is families, churches and civic organizations that sustain our moral foundation.”
“We hope that you will better understand what a temple is and what it means to us,” Elder Steven R. Bangerter, executive director of the Church’s Temple Department, told the media.
The temple is “a place where we more perfectly learn to follow the teachings of our Savior Jesus Christ, to more perfectly serve as one child of God to another, regardless of faith, religion or creed,” Elder Bangerter explained. “Those boundaries are meaningless to God, our Heavenly Father. We believe we are all His children.”
Elder Bangerter participated in the news conference with the governor and Elko Mayor Reece Keener.
“I would like to thank the Church for making the decision to locate [a temple] in Elko,” said Mayor Keener. “It truly is remarkable. You look at the quality of the stonework, the tile work, all of the furnishings, [and] the windows. Everything is absolutely remarkable.”
Elder Michael A. Dunn, a General Authority Seventy who assists in overseeing the Church in the United States Southwest Area, also attended the news conference and tours. Invited guests will have the opportunity to tour the temple through August 29.

Public Open House
A public open house will run from August 30 through September 13, excluding Sundays. No tickets are needed to tour the temple.
Elder Gary E. Stevenson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will dedicate the temple on Sunday, October 12, 2025. The dedicatory session will be broadcast to all units in the temple district and rebroadcast.
The Elko temple district includes towns and communities in six large counties, covering nearly half of the state of Nevada.
The Elko Nevada Temple is one of 382 temples around the world that are operating, announced or under construction.
About the Elko Nevada Temple
The Elko Nevada Temple is 12,901 square feet and sits on a 5.2-acre site. The temple is at 2102 Ruby Vista Drive in Elko.
The exterior of this temple is structural steel and stone veneer. The desert globemallow, a native flower, is beautifully integrated throughout the building. The rich cultural heritage of the Paiute and Shoshone tribes inspires the geometric patterns, and the use of orange, yellow and green accent colors throughout the building reflects the vibrant hues found in the landscapes of Elko.
President Russell M. Nelson announced the Elko Nevada Temple during general conference in April 2021. A groundbreaking ceremony for the temple was held on May 7, 2022.
This will be Nevada’s third operating temple, following the Las Vegas Nevada Temple, which was dedicated in December 1989. The Reno Nevada Temple was dedicated in April 2000. A fourth temple, the Lone Mountain Nevada Temple, was announced in October 2022. The site was announced earlier this year. Nevada is home to more than 183,000 Latter-day Saints in nearly 340 congregations.
Temples of the Church of Jesus Christ are different from meetinghouses or chapels where members gather for Sunday worship services. A temple is considered a house of the Lord, where the teachings of Jesus Christ are reaffirmed through marriage, baptism and other sacred promises that unite families for eternity.
