Family Home Evening Timeline

The following lists significant dates related to family home evening.

April 27, 1915
First Presidency (Joseph F. Smith, Anthon H. Lund and Charles W. Penrose) invitation to hold “home evening.”

January 1965
Renewed emphasis on family home evening by President David O. McKay; Family Home Evening Manual published. Guidance given for individuals conducting family home evening and not living at home, including students or other single adults gathered in a group setting.

1970
Monday was selected as family home evening throughout the entire Church; no other Church meetings or functions would be scheduled on that night.

1985
After 20 years of publishing an annual family home evening manual, the Family Home Evening Resource Book was introduced and is still in print.

1987
Family home evening video supplement with 19 vignettes produced and distributed.
