Plans to construct the temple were announced April 1, 1981, Church leaders broke ground July 1, 1985 and Ezra Taft Benson, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1985 to 1994, dedicated the Frankfurt Germany Temple August 28, 1987. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in Germany, Luxembourg, northern France and Slovenia.

The exterior of the 24,170-square-foot temple is white granite and a copper roof.

Currently, there are more than 30 temples in various stages of construction or have been announced throughout the world.
