Plans to construct the temple were announced 8 January 1999, Church leaders broke ground 20 March 1999 and Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1995 to 2008, dedicated the Fresno California Temple 9 April 2000. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in central California.

The exterior of the 10,700-square-foot temple is Sierra white granite.

Currently, there are more than 20 temples in various stages of construction or have been announced throughout the world.
