Plans to construct the temple were announced 1 April 1981, Church leaders broke ground 12 September 1982, and Gordon B. Hinckley, then a counselor in the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, dedicated the Guatemala City Guatemala Temple 14 December 1984. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in Guatemala and Belize.

The exterior of the 17,609-square-foot temple is natural white Guatemala marble.

Currently, there are more than 20 temples in various stages of construction or have been announced throughout the world.
