SALT LAKE CITY — A delegation from the state
of Illinois
led by Lieutenant Governor Patrick Quinn met with leaders of The
Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints today in Salt Lake City to offer
"official
regret" for the persecution of Latter-day Saints in Illinois in the
1840s.
"On behalf of the people of Illinois, I want to
express our official regret for the events that occurred in the
1840s.
Religious hate crimes perpetrated in the 19th century were
wrong, just as
they are today in the 21st century," Quinn
said. "Religious persecution is
against the principles upon which our country was founded."
