This house of the Lord was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the closing session of general conference in October 2021.

“Make your own spiritual foundation firm and able to stand the test of time by doing those things that allow the Holy Ghost to be with you always,” the prophet said before he announced 13 new temples, including the La Paz Bolivia Temple. “Counter the lure of the world,” he added, “by making time for the Lord in your life — each and every day.”

The site location for this new temple was released in August 2023.

This is Bolivia’s third house of the Lord. The Cochabamba Bolivia Temple, the country’s first, was dedicated in April 2000 by former Church President Gordon B. Hinckley. The Santa Cruz Bolivia Temple was announced in October 2020.

Bolivia is home to more than 221,000 Latter-day Saints in over 270 congregations.

Latter-day Saints consider each temple a house of the Lord and the most sacred place of worship on earth. Temples differ from the Church’s meetinghouses (chapels). All are welcome to attend Sunday worship services and other weekday activities at local meetinghouses. The primary purpose of temples is for faithful members of the Church of Jesus Christ to participate in sacred ceremonies such as marriages, which unite families forever, and proxy baptisms on behalf of deceased ancestors who did not have the opportunity to be baptized while living.
