Plans to construct the temple were announced 7 August 2002, Church leaders broke ground 23 September 2002, and Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1995 to 2008, dedicated the Manhattan New York Temple 13 June 2004. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.
The 20,630-square-foot temple’s exterior is light variegated granite.
Currently, there are more than 20 temples in various stages of construction or have been announced throughout the world.
