Plans to construct the temple were announced 30 October 1998, Church leaders broke ground 20 March 1999, and Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1995 to 2008, dedicated the Melbourne Australia Temple 16 June 2000. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in Melbourne, Hobart, Devonport and Albury.

The 10,700-square-foot temple’s exterior is snow white granite.

Currently, there are more than 20 temples in various stages of construction or have been announced throughout the world.
