Plans to construct the temple were announced October 4, 1997, Church leaders broke ground November 17, 1997, and Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1995 to 2008, dedicated the Monticello Utah Temple July 26, 1998. After the temple was enlarged, he rededicated it November 17, 2002. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in Southeastern Utah and southwestern Colorado.

The 11,225-square-foot temple’s exterior is white marble.

Currently, there are 30 temples in various stages of construction or have been announced throughout the world.
