Mormon Tabernacle Choir Announces 2018 West Coast Tour

Performances planned in US and Canada

Members of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square are headed west for their 2018 tour. The choir will perform in five cities in California, Washington and Vancouver, Canada, next summer. The Classic Coast Tour begins on Monday, June 18, and will conclude 16 days later, Tuesday, July 3, 2018.

“When we experience great music in great spaces, it makes for a great experience — both for the audience and the performer as well,” said Mack Wilberg, choir music director.

Ron Jarrett, president of the choir, added, “There is nothing quite like hearing the choir and orchestra live in concert and experiencing their signature all-encompassing sound. We love going on the road to connect with our audiences and seeing firsthand the pure joy music can bring to the hearts and minds of our fans.”

Music for the Classic Coast Tour concerts will include choral masterworks, inspirational music from around the world, American folk hymns and spirituals and more.

Schedule

The 2018 Classic Coast Tour performances will begin on Tuesday, June 19, with a concert in Costa Mesa, California, at the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. Choir members performed in 2004 at Segerstrom Center for the Arts, but this will their first performance in this new concert hall, built since their last visit.

The next stop will be in Mountain View for a concert at the Shoreline Amphitheatre on Monday, June 25. The choir and orchestra will wrap up the California leg of their tour in the community of Rohnert Park on Wednesday, June 27, with a concert at Weill Hall at the Green Music Center on the campus of Sonoma State University.

The Choir anticipates adding other California appearances to the Classic Coast Tour with announcements to follow in the near future.

The choir and orchestra will be crossing over into Canada for a concert at the Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver, British Columbia, on Saturday, June 30. The choir previously performed in Vancouver in 1962 and 1986.

The tour wraps up on Monday, July 2, with a visit to Seattle, Washington, with a performance at the S. Mark Taper Foundation Auditorium at Benaroya Hall. The choir first visited Seattle over a century ago as part of its 1909 Alaska-Yukon Pacific Exposition Tour and has returned for four other performances, most recently in 2005.

Touring History

Since its first tour outside of Utah in 1893, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir has toured extensively across the United States and abroad. It has performed throughout Europe and in music capitals from Israel and Russia to Japan and Australia. Its travels have also included performances at the inaugural activities of seven U.S. presidents. After its founding in 1999, a small ensemble from the Orchestra at Temple Square accompanied the choir on tours in 2001 and 2003; however, since 2005, a full complement of the orchestra has traveled with the singers.

The all-volunteer choir and orchestra usually tour every other year since all of the performers take vacation time from their jobs and leave their families to undertake the travel. The most recent tour was an enormously well-received tour to seven European countries in 2016.
