Mormonism in the News: Getting It Right | August 25, 2015

“Mormonism in the News: Getting It Right” presents several recent news articles, blog posts or videos that provide accurate and fair reporting on The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as well as those that misrepresent the faith to readers.

This edition of “Getting It Right” includes coverage of the dedication of the Indianapolis Indiana Temple and an interview with a Catholic scholar about Mormon-Catholic relations.

Indianapolis Indiana Temple Coverage

The Indianapolis Star, Associated Press and WISH TV are among the news outlets with coverage of Sunday’s dedication of the Church’s Indianapolis Indiana Temple in Carmel, Indiana.

The Star article is the most extensive, describing the purpose of Latter-day Saint temples and how they differ from chapels.

“The temple is the most sacred space of the Mormon faith, used for ordinances for Mormon families who wish to become closer to God,” reporter Justin L. Mack writes. “Rooms within host baptisms, weddings, meditation and sealings, a ceremony in which a husband, wife and sometimes children commit to one another. Church services are not held in the temple.”

Mack also speaks with a local Latter-day Saint who talks about the benefits of having a temple so close to home.

“Now we don’t have to travel down to Louisville, but more importantly, we can come more often now,” Latter-day Saint Julia Von Bargen says. “When I grew up in the West, we would only go once a year. … As I got older, there was one that was six hours away, so we went a couple times a year. As they build more and more temples, you get to go more often, and that’s the big thing. I know we won’t take it for granted.”

America Magazine: Catholic Author Encourages Mormon-Catholic Dialogue, Notes Mormonism’s Focus on Jesus Christ

America magazine (a Catholic publication) interviews Stephen H. Webb, co-author of the new book Catholic and Mormon: A Theological Conversation.

Webb is asked about the purpose of his book, whether Mormons are Christians and what Catholics can learn from Mormons (and vice versa).

Webb says the central thrust of Latter-day Saint teachings is “the Lordship of Jesus Christ as the Son of God and our one true Savior.”
