Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Peru have celebrated the Church’s 50-year anniversary by participating in a countrywide day of service.
Mormons across the country worked together to serve their local communities by cleaning up streets, cemeteries, stadiums and plazas. In the Lima/Callao area, more than 6,200 members participated in the cleaning of major cemeteries — El Ángel, Presbítero Maestro and Baquijano and Carrillo.
“Church members felt the best way to celebrate the anniversary was to follow the example of Jesus Christ and serve,” said José Bisbal, local Church spokesman.
Over the last few years, the Church in Peru has received recognition from national institutions such as the Ministry of Health and the National Institute of Family Welfare for its humanitarian contributions. The Church has also participated in programs to strengthen the family — the fundamental unit of society.
The Church was officially organized in Peru in 1956 and now has over 400,000 members.
