Plans to construct the temple were announced 25 September 1998, Church leaders broke ground 16 January 1999, and President Thomas S. Monson, then first counselor in the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, dedicated the Mérida Mexico Temple 8 July 2000. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in the Yucatan Peninsula.
The 10,700-square-foot temple’s exterior is Guardiano white marble.
Currently, there are 30 temples in various stages of construction or have been announced throughout the world.
