Latest Hymn Release Emphasizes Simple, Christ-Centered Truths

Ten new songs in “Hymns for Home and Church” are now available in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and French. This release is part of an ongoing, phased rollout that will continue through next year. The songs will be available later today in the Gospel Library.

The hymns in this release include:

• “Peace, Peace, Be Still”
• “Great Is Thy Faithfulness”
• “Isaiah Said”
• “Fight the Good Fight”
• “It’s Joyful to Live the Gospel”
• “To God Be the Glory”
• “Speak to Us, Lord”
• “The Miracle”
• “What God Calls Us To”
• “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross”

With these additions, Hymns for Home and Church now include 82 songs in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and French.

Additional hymns are being released in other languages, including 22 in Armenian and Malagasy, nine in Cebuano, Indonesian, Italian, Samoan, and Tongan, and 12 in German, Korean, and Tagalog.

Using the New Hymns

Mateus Rangel, from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, serves as the music coordinator in his Portuguese-speaking congregation in Provo, Utah. He has seen the blessings of helping members become more engaged with singing the new hymns.

“There is power in music,” said Rangel. “So, I started texting and sharing with them the hymns that I [had] selected for the meeting in advance, and I shared the link to the [recording] so they could listen to it before the meeting.”

Each hymn includes recordings that help individuals learn the melodies and practice singing. Some recordings have children’s voices — a feature Rangel uses with his family.

“My kids just got familiarized with the new hymns because they have something to connect with, more than the lyrics and the melodies,” he said. “They also have the kids’ voice.”

He said he appreciates the simple truths shared through the new hymns, as they help him teach his children.

“We love singing ‘When the Savior Comes Again,’ and it’s powerful to have my kids singing the lyrics with us,” Rangel said. “The other day, my second child asked me if I knew the day when the Savior would come again. I [used] this hymn to explain that we have no idea, but we will be happy when He does come again.

“I love the way simple truths are spoken through the lyrics of the new hymns.”

The new Christ-focused hymns also help Rangel select which hymns to sing on Sunday.

“All the hymns are connected to Christ, and this is our main message. This is the purpose we meet every Sunday –– to increase our faith in Christ,” Rangel said. While priesthood leaders and music coordinators work together to align the themes of the spoken messages and the hymns, Rangel appreciates how the new hymns “talk about Christ.”

Through these simple efforts, Rangel has felt a change in his family and congregation.

“I can see the impact on my family, my kids, and my congregation,” he said. “People are more inspired to follow Jesus Christ as they learn [by] singing the new hymns.”

In Japan, Tak Mochizuki uses new hymns in the seminary classes he teaches. One of his students, Yue Tanaka shared, “The new music feels very modern, and it has become more familiar to me.”

Mitsuki Mimaki, another one of Mochizuki’s students, said, “I love singing the new hymns. I used to hear many hymns during general conference, and then I realized that some of my favorites, such as ‘I will Walk with Jesus’ and ‘Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing’ are now in the new [hymnbook].”

He added, “They are so motivating, and I am so happy that I get to sing these new ones.”

Around the world, members are finding that these hymns—simple, Christ-centered, and worth learning—are strengthening faith and bringing the message of Jesus Christ more deeply into their homes and worship.
