During his opening remarks today at the first session of the 175th Semiannual General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, President Gordon B. Hinckley announced that a new temple will be built in the western part of the Salt Lake Valley.
This new temple will be the fourth in the Salt Lake area and the thirteenth in Utah. The temple will be located in the Daybreak development, situated in western South Jordan, Utah. The exact site location will be announced at a later date.
President Hinckley also indicated that a fifth Salt-Lake-area temple site has been acquired in the southwest part of the valley for future use as Church growth continues.
To members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints temples are the “House of the Lord,” the most sacred place on earth. Unlike meetinghouses where Sabbath worship and weekly activities take place, temples are open throughout the week and closed on Sundays.
Temple services bind
families together forever, teach the purpose of life and explain
God’s plan of salvation. Temple attendance strengthens Latter-day
Saints’ commitment to living Christian principles, emphasizes
personal spiritual growth and increases devotion to
family.
