New Temple Will Be Built in Honduras

SALT LAKE CITY — The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced the construction of a new temple in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

It will be the fourth temple for the Church in Central America. Other Central American temples are located in Guatemala City, Guatemala (1984); San Jose, Costa Rica (2000); and Panama City, Panama (under construction).

The new temple will serve Latter-day Saints throughout Honduras and Nicaragua. As of December 2005, Honduras and Nicaragua were home to more than 168,000 members of the Church and 302 congregations.

Latter-day Saint temples differ from the Church’s meetinghouses or chapels, where members meet for Sunday worship services.

Temples are considered "houses of the Lord" where Christ's teachings are reaffirmed through marriage, baptism and other ordinances that unite families for eternity.

The newly announced temple becomes the Church’s 134th temple operating, announced or under construction. (See official temple list at
