Plans to construct the temple were announced 21 April 2001, Church leaders broke ground 15 August 2003, and Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1995 to 2008, dedicated the Newport Beach California Temple 28 August 2005. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in Orange County.

The 17,800-square-foot temple’s exterior is Salisbury pink granite.

Currently, there are more than 20 temples in various stages of construction or have been announced throughout the world.
