Five New Temples Announced

During his remarks today at the first session of the 180th Semiannual General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Church President Thomas S. Monson announced that the Church would build five new temples. The new temples will be built in Hartford, Connecticut; Indianapolis, Indiana; Tijuana, Mexico; Urdaneta, Philippines; and Lisbon, Portugal.

The new temples will be the first for the Church in Portugal, Indiana and Connecticut.  The Urdaneta temple will be the Church’s third in the Philippines, and the Tijuana temple will be Mexico’s thirteenth temple.

Additional details on the new temples will be announced as they become available.

To members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints temples are the “house of the Lord,” the most sacred places on earth. Unlike meetinghouses where Sabbath worship and weekly activities take place, temples are open throughout the week and closed on Sundays.

Temple services bind families together forever, teach the purpose of life and explain God’s plan of salvation. Temple attendance strengthens Latter-day Saints’ commitment to living Christian principles, emphasizes personal spiritual growth and increases devotion to family.

There are currently 134 operating temples worldwide, seven under construction and, with today’s announcement, 16 temples announced.
