News for Temples in Canada and the US

Understanding the spiritual privileges in the temple is vital, President Nelson says

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has released the artistic rendering for a temple in Canada, the location of two temples in the U.S.: the Des Moines Iowa and the Cincinnati Ohio Temples. Both houses of the Lord were announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the concluding session of general conference in April 2024.

“Understanding the spiritual privileges made possible in the temple is vital to each of us today,” President Nelson said.

Lethbridge Alberta Temple

An exterior Rendering has been released for the Lethbridge Alberta Temple.

This temple will be built on more than nine acres located at the corner of Whoop Up Drive West and Mauretania Road West, Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. Plans call for a multistory temple of approximately 45,000 square feet and an accompanying distribution center.

The Lethbridge Alberta Temple was first announced in April 2023 by Church President Russell M. Nelson. This will be the fourth house of the Lord in the province of Alberta and the 10th overall in Canada. Alberta is home to the first temple built in the country and just the sixth temple built by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Cardston Alberta Temple, which was dedicated 100 years ago in August 1923 by previous Church President Heber J. Grant, is also the first temple constructed outside the United States. The other eight temples in operation in Canada are in the cities of Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, Montreal, Regina, Toronto, Vancouver and Winnipeg.

In September 1830, the father and brother of Joseph Smith Jr., the first Prophet and President of the Church of Jesus Christ, preached in several Canadian towns close to the United States border. Between 1830 and 1850, some 2,500 Canadians joined the Church. Cardston, Alberta, was settled by Latter-day Saints in 1887. Today, Canada is home to more than 200,000 Latter-day Saints in around 490 congregations.

The Des Moines Iowa Temple

This temple will be built on a 19.576-acre site located at 9050 NW 62nd Avenue, Johnston, IA 50131. Plans call for a single-story temple of approximately 18,850 square feet. This will be the state’s first temple.

Detailed design plans for the temple are still being developed. Further information, including an exterior rendering and a groundbreaking date, will be released in the future. Project leaders will soon start working with city officials on preliminary plans for the temple, and they will begin filing public documents in the coming months.

Des Moines is the capital and most populous city in Iowa, with more than 200,000 residents. This Midwest U.S. state is home to more than 29,000 Latter-day Saints in about 70 congregations.

In the 1840s, nearly 200 Latter-day Saint pioneers established a small community named Garden Grove, where they planted crops and built cabins for the pioneer companies that migrated westward toward Utah in the ensuing years. Other communities were built at Mount Pisgah and Council Bluffs.

Cincinnati Ohio Temple

This temple will be built on a 35-acre site located at the intersection of Mason-Montgomery Road & Cedar Village Drive, Mason, OH 45040. Plans call for a single-story temple of approximately 29,630 square feet. This will be the city’s first temple.

The Cincinnati Ohio Temple will be the third house of the Lord in the state after the Columbus and Cleveland Ohio Temples. Cincinnati is the third-largest city in this Midwest U.S. state. The greater Cincinnati metro area has a population of more than 2.2 million people.

Kirtland, Ohio (located near Cleveland), served as an important center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the 1830s, where a temple was built but left behind as the Church relocated. Community of Christ transferred ownership of the Kirtland Temple on March 5, 2024.

Today, Ohio is home to nearly 65,000 Latter-day Saints in about 130 congregations.

Latter-day Saints consider temples to be houses of the Lord and the most sacred places of worship on the earth. The primary purpose of temples is for faithful members of the Church to receive peace, inspiration, and spiritual power as they enter into sacred agreements with God in His house.
