Newsweek Reporter Explains Church's Political Neutrality Stance On MSNBC

Speaking with MSNBC’s Thomas Roberts, Newsweek Washington reporter Michelle Cottle explains The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ (Mormon) political neutrality position.

“One of [the Church’s] key messages is that it’s not political and it’s not partisan,” Cottle says, “so it’s doing a lot of outreach to the public and to journalists in particular trying to get across the message.”

Roberts quotes from the Church’s political neutrality statement, including the portion that says the Church reserves “the right as an institution to address, in a nonpartisan way, issues that it believes have significant community or moral consequences or that directly affect the interests of the Church.”

“They draw a big distinction between issues,” Cottle says. “They are happy to back issues and be very clear about where they stand on issues, but they do not translate that into pushing specific candidates or specific party platforms.”
