Note to Journalists on News Headlines

In the news conference Tuesday in Salt Lake City, leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints called for legislation that seeks to balance the protection of religious freedoms and gay rights. We’re gratified with the care journalists across the country have taken in reporting on this story. Their coverage has been extensive.

We need to point out that in a few cases the headlines (which typically are not written by the reporter) are misleading readers and viewers by omitting the religious freedom element of the announcement, which is at its core. Here are a few examples that get it right:

NBC News: Mormon Leaders Appeal for Balance of Gay and Religious Rights

USA Today: Mormons seek to 'balance' gay and religious rights

UPI: Mormon Church seeks balance of LGBT rights, religious freedom

Associated Press: Mormon leaders call for ‘balanced approach’ in clash between gay rights, religious freedom

KIDK 3: LDS leaders call for balance of gay rights, religious liberties

The Blaze: Mormon Leaders Reveal ‘Fairness for All’ Approach to Tackle Heated Battle Over Religious Freedom and LGBT Rights During Rare Press Conference
