Messages featured in the Saturday evening session of the October 2022 general conference on October 1 focused on deepening faith in the Savior.
The close to 90-minute general session — meant for all Church members — included talks from one Apostle, a counselor in the Young Women General Presidency, the Presiding Bishop and two General Authority Seventies.
During this Saturday night session, Elder Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles offered three ways Latter-day Saints can deepen commitment to the Savior.
“We realize that as evil increases in the world, our spiritual survival, and the spiritual survival of those we love, will require that we more fully nurture, fortify and strengthen the roots of our faith in Jesus Christ.”
In her fourth general conference address since being called to the Young Women general presidency, Sister Michelle D. Craig assured Latter-day Saints that trials do not mean the plan is failing.
“When your faith, your family or your future are challenged — when you wonder why life is so hard when you are doing your best to live the gospel — remember that the Lord told us to expect troubles. Troubles are part of the plan and do not mean you’ve been abandoned; they are part of what it means to be His,” she said.
Elder Kevin W. Pearson, a General Authority Seventy, expounded on a phrase from the sacrament prayers, asking whether listeners are willing to witness unto God that they are willing.
“Heavenly Father loves us perfectly, but that love comes with great expectations,” he said.
Having been introduced to the gospel by a classmate, Elder Denelson Silva, a General Authority Seventy, said he realized he, too, must proclaim the truth. “The privilege of representing the Savior Jesus Christ and His Church cannot be ignored.”
Presiding Bishop Gérald Caussé offered three principles that can guide individuals’ stewardship of the earth. “The care of the earth and of our natural environment is a sacred responsibility entrusted to us by God,” he said.
A choir of children and youth from South Jordan, Utah, provided music under the direction of Alison Unsworth. Temple Square organists Linda Margetts and Andrew Unsworth accompanied the young choir.
The invocation was given by Elder Mathias Held, a General Authority Seventy, with the benediction given by Primary General President Susan H. Porter.
Most Saturday evening sessions at previous conferences have alternated between a priesthood session for men and boys or a women’s session for girls 11 and older. Exceptions were the Saturday evening session of the April 2020 general conference, which was dedicated to the bicentennial commemoration of the First Vision; all members participated virtually due to the escalating COVID-19 pandemic. The Saturday evening session in October 2021 also was for all members. The Saturday evening session at general conference in April 2022 was a session for women and girls.
