Plans to construct the temple were announced 9 February 1999 (100th temple to be announced), Church leaders broke ground 25 May 1999, and Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1995 to 2008, dedicated the Palmyra New York Temple 6 April 2000. President Hinckley dedicated the temple 170 years to the day after the Church was organized. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in upper New York.

The 10,700-square-foot temple’s exterior is Bethel white granite.

Currently, there are more than 20 temples in various stages of construction or have been announced throughout the world.
