Peru President Joins Interfaith Ceremony Celebrating Divine Creation

On the evening of July 22, 2024, Peru President Dina Boluarte Zegarra participated in an interfaith prayer ceremony organized by the Interreligious Council of Peru.

President Boluarte was welcomed by council head Monsignor Salvador Piñeiro, along with Elder Rafael E. Pino of the South America Northwest Area Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Bishop Cesar Llanco of the Methodist Church of Peru.

The theme of this year’s ceremony was “Celebrating Divine Creation.” Bishop Llanco opened the event with a prayer, asking God to protect the people of Peru.

The opening prayer was followed by a time of reflection in which the religious leaders shared messages from their respective sacred texts. Elder Pino read scriptures from the Book of Mormon (1 Nephi 17:36 and 2 Nephi 2:25) that speak of God’s great love in providing a magnificent, beautiful and varied land for His children.

Monsignor Piñeiro concluded by recalling the gift of the creation of the universe, vast and beautiful. He invited attendees to remember: “All Peruvians are family.”

During the ceremony, the Methodist Carlos Wesley Choir and the Interreligious Choir (composed of members from the different religious faiths) performed. The choir was directed by José Federico Quezada Macchiavello.

The Interreligious Council of Peru, part of international organization Religions for Peace, brings together many faiths, including Anglicans, Bahá’ís, Buddhists, Catholics, Latter-day Saints, Methodists and Muslims.
