Plans to construct the temple were announced 7 April 1984, Church leaders broke ground 20 September 1986 and President Gordon B. Hinckley, then a member of the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, dedicated the Portland Oregon Temple 19 August 1989. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in Oregon and parts of Washington.

The 80,500-square-foot temple’s exterior is white marble walls and slate roof.

Currently, there are more than 20 temples in various stages of construction or have been announced throughout the world.
