Plans to construct the temple were announced 19 October 1992, Church leaders broke ground 12 June 1994, and Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1995 to 2008, dedicated the Preston England Temple 7 June 1998. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in northern England, Scotland, Ireland and Northern Ireland.

The 60,000-square-foot temple’s exterior is Olympia white granite from Sardinia, Italy.

Currently, there are more than 20 temples in various stages of construction or have been announced throughout the world.
