Plans to construct the temple were announced 13 January 1995, Church leaders broke ground 15 November 1996, and Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1995 to 2008, dedicated the Recife Brazil Temple 15 December 2000. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in northern Brazil.

The 37,200-square-foot temple’s exterior is Asa Branca granite from the state of Ceara.

Currently, there are more than 20 temples in various stages of construction or have been announced throughout the world.
