Plans to construct the temple were announced 21 April 2001, Church leaders broke ground 22 August 2004, and Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1995 to 2008, dedicated the Sacramento California Temple 3 September 2006. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in northern California.

The 19,500-square-foot temple’s exterior is temple white granite from Fuzhou, China.

Currently, there are more than 20 temples in various stages of construction or have been announced throughout the world.
