Plans to construct the temple were announced 24 June 2001, Church leaders broke ground 29 March 2003, and Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1995 to 2008, dedicated the San Antonio Texas Temple 22 May 2005. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in southwest Texas.

The 16,800-square-foot temple’s exterior is granite.

Currently, there are more than 20 temples in various stages of construction or have been announced throughout the world.
