Plans to construct the temple were announced 17 March 1999, Church leaders broke ground 24 April 1999, and President James E. Faust, then second counselor in the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, dedicated the San José Costa Rica Temple 4 June 2000. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in Costa Rica and Nicaragua.

The 10,700-square-foot temple’s exterior is Blanco Guardiano white marble.

Currently, there are more than 20 temples in various stages of construction or have been announced throughout the world.
