Plans to construct the temple were announced 16 November 1993, Church leaders broke ground 18 August 1996, and Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1995 to 2008, dedicated the Santo Domingo Dominican Republic Temple 17 September 2000. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in the Caribbean.

The 67,000-square-foot temple’s exterior is Regina white granite.

Currently, there are more than 20 temples in various stages of construction or have been announced throughout the world.
