Plans to construct the temple were announced 18 December 1990, Church leaders broke ground 30 October 1993, and Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1995 to 2008, dedicated the St. Louis Missouri Temple 1 June 1997. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in Missouri, Illinois, Iowa and Kansas.

The 60,085-square-foot temple’s exterior is cast stone and Bethal white granite with thermal finish.

Currently, there are more than 20 temples in various stages of construction or have been announced throughout the world.
