Plans to construct the temple were announced 2 April 1980, Church leaders broke ground 13 August 1982, and President Gordon B. Hinckley, then a member of the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, dedicated the Sydney Australia Temple 20 September 1984. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in southern Australia and Papua New Guinea.

The 30,067-square-foot temple’s exterior is precast panels, white quartz finish and terra cotta roof tiles.

Currently, there are over 50 temples in various stages of construction, renovation or have been announced throughout the world.
