Plans to construct the temple were announced 9 June 2006. Church leaders broke ground 12 September 2009, and President Dieter F. Uchtdorf , second counselor in the First Presidency, dedicated the Tegucigalpa Honduras Temple 17 March 2013. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, and Nicaragua.

The 28,254-square-foot temple features gray granite from China.

Currently, there are more than 20 temples in various stages of construction or have been announced throughout the world.
