The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced groundbreaking dates for the Yorba Linda California Temple, the Burley Idaho Temple and the Smithfield Utah Temple, all of which were announced by President Russell M. Nelson in April 2021.
Yorba Linda California Temple
The groundbreaking ceremony for the Yorba Linda California Temple will be held on Saturday, June 18. Elder Mark A. Bragg of the Quorum of the Seventy will preside.
The Yorba Linda California Temple will be built on a 5.4-acre site located at the intersection of Bastanchury Road and Osmond Street in Yorba Linda. Plans call for a single-story structure of about 30,000 square feet. This will be California’s ninth temple, following the Fresno, Los Angeles, Newport Beach, Oakland, Redlands, Sacramento and San Diego California Temples. The Feather River California Temple is under construction.
California is home to approximately 750,000 Latter-day Saints in more than 1,200 congregations.
Burley Idaho Temple
Leaders will break ground for the Burley Idaho Temple on Saturday, June 4. Elder Brent H. Nielson of the Quorum of the Seventy will preside.
The Burley Idaho Temple will be located on a 10.1-acre site located at 40 South and 150 East. The two-story structure will be about 38,600 square feet. The Burley Idaho Temple will be the seventh temple in the state, following the Boise, Idaho Falls, Meridian, Rexburg, Twin Falls, and Pocatello Idaho Temples.
Idaho is home to over 460,000 Latter-day Saints in more than 1,000 congregations.
Smithfield Utah Temple
The groundbreaking ceremony for the Smithfield Utah Temple will be held on Saturday, June 18. Elder Quentin L. Cook of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will preside at the event. He will be accompanied by fellow Apostle, Elder Gary E. Stevenson.
The Smithfield Utah Temple will be built on a 13.3-acre site at the intersection of N 800 West and W 100 North. Plans call for a three-story structure of about 83,000 square feet. Utah has 28 temples announced, under construction, under renovation or in operation. In addition to the temple in Smithfield, temples have been announced or are under construction in Ephraim, Heber Valley, Layton, Lindon, Orem, St. George (Red Cliffs), Saratoga Springs, Syracuse, Taylorsville and Tooele (Deseret Peak).
Attendance at all three groundbreaking ceremonies will be by invitation only.
Latter-day Saints consider temples to be the “house of the Lord” and the most sacred places of worship on the earth. Temples differ from the Church’s meetinghouses (chapels). All are welcome to attend Sunday worship services and other weekday activities at local meetinghouses. The primary purpose of temples is for faithful members of the Church to participate in sacred ceremonies. These include marriages to unite families forever and proxy baptisms on behalf of deceased ancestors who did not have the opportunity to be baptized while living.
