Tropical storm Washi, which hit the southern Philippines island of Mindanao in the early hours of Saturday, 17 December, triggered flooding and landslides causing widespread destruction and hundreds of deaths.
According to official government reports, hundreds of people remain missing nearly three days after the most devastating cyclone to hit the Philippines in the past two years. Floods have affected nearly 150,000 people.
All full-time missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) are safe. Church Welfare personnel are on the ground in the Cagayan De Oro area working with local church and community leaders to provide assistance and seek solutions for continuing relief efforts.
Members from nearby congregations not affected by the floods are working together to assist members and others in the community.
