Plans to construct the temple were announced 25 April 1998, Church leaders broke ground 12 September 1998, and Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1995 to 2008, dedicated the Columbus Ohio Temple 4 September 1999. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in north and central Ohio, western West Virginia and Tennessee.

The exterior of the 10,700-square-foot temple is Imperial Danby Vermont marble.

Currently, there are more than 20 temples in various stages of construction or have been announced throughout the world.
