Misstatement:
"The Church is avoiding too much of a public profile, even though its leaders and members played a major role in bringing the Games to their city. Those efforts succeeded in attracting the Games, but also created the worst bribery scandal in Olympic history, one that caused considerable embarrassment to the Mormon Church."
Fact:
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints remained neutral during the bid process. While some individual members participated in bringing the Games to Salt Lake City as employees of the bid committee, the Church and its leaders had no role in the process.
