Pacific: Latter-day Saint Family Promotes Literacy
A Mormon mother is using her doctoral research from the University of Canterbury to help students improve their English literacy.

Melanie Riwai-Couch and her 12-year-old son Brigham and 10-year-old daughter, Mei, are working in the Wai Study Help program to help Maori students achieve a quality education with free one-on-one tutoring. They’re also working with Ngai Tahu, the local Maori tribe.

Samoa: Young Samoans Help Prepare New Hospital for Opening
A group of young Samoan Mormons recently spent a morning cleaning up flower beds, sidewalks and driveways surrounding Samoa’s new national hospital prior to its grand opening ceremony.
Some people had taken time off work or postponed other activities to participate. Officials at the Tamasese Meaole Hospital at Motootua, Samoa, expressed gratitude for the service of the young people.
A volunteer explained, “One of our missions of the Church is to help our community and to be an example and give service. Doing small acts of service brings about much good.”

Uruguay: Latter-day Saint Women Donate Handmade Clothes to Children’s Hospital
For the past year, members of the Relief Society, the women’s organization of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in Montevideo helped weave wool clothing for babies and make fleece blankets, shawls and children’s pants. The handmade clothing was donated to the Pereira Rossell Hospital in June.
Some of the women were invited to deliver the clothes room by room at the hospital, where the mothers were pleasantly surprised and grateful for the donations.

Chile: Church Leaders Build Bridges with Chilean Government Officials
Church leaders in Concepción, Chile, met with members of the Chilean parliament in June to foster ties of friendship and understanding.
In two meetings last month, Church leaders explained some of the basic principles of the Church and discussed the core values that its members follow.

Russia: Single Adults Attend Russian Conference
Single adult members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints gathered in Moscow in June for a religious conference.
This conference was the first of its kind in Eastern Europe. Participants, ages 31 to 50, came from all over Russia and the Baltic States to discuss a common theme: “Stand ye in holy places.”
The conference provided a full schedule of meetings with Church leaders, speeches, lessons, music, games and entertainment.

Germany: Mormons Join Interfaith Council
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has joined the interfaith council in Hanaua, a city east of Frankfurt, Germany.
At the invitation of the mayor, the group, which includes representatives of several local churches, met recently. The Church is one of the founding members of the Frankfurt Council of Religions.
