General Officers Deliver Backpacks in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula

Donation will enable residents in Cancún to prepare for emergencies

Three leaders from the General Presidencies of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints joined local members of the Church in Cancún, Mexico, on September 20 to deliver a donation of 300 emergency backpacks to the Development of the Family (DIF) organization in the Benito Juárez municipality.

Sister J. Anette Dennis, First Counselor in the Relief Society General Presidency, presented the donation with Sister Andrea Muñoz Spannaus, Second Counselor in the Young Women General Presidency, and Sister Tracy Y. Browning, Second Counselor in the Primary General Presidency.

This donation — which included backpacks filled with basic necessities, hygiene items, first- aid supplies, and clothing and blankets — is intended to help vulnerable populations in a region prone to hurricanes.

The sisters praised DIF’s work to promote the well-being and development of families.

During the delivery of the emergency backpacks, Yendi Gabriela Martín, director of religious affairs for the municipality, outlined the Church's presence and previous service in the city.

Elder Nelson Ramirez, Area Seventy of the Church, explained that prevention, preparedness, and responsiveness are key ways to meet life’s challenges more effectively.

“In this way, the Church of Jesus Christ joins the effort of the Benito Juárez DIF to support the vulnerable population that is at risk due to natural disasters,” said Elder Ramirez.

Church leaders toured the facilities and learned about DIF services DIF. These include health care, sports, education, legal advice and a shelter for the elderly.
