The Family History Library of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will conduct a weeklong genealogical workshop for the deaf and hard of hearing 19–23 June 2006 at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. Classes begin at 9 a.m. on Monday, 19 June, and run through the end of the week.
Instructors who are fluent in American Sign Language will teach an array of genealogical classes to participants from the United States and Canada. Family history volunteers will also be available to work one-on-one with workshop participants.
Amy Johnson Crow, a certified genealogist from Reynoldsburg, Ohio, and co-author of Online Roots: How to Discover Your Family’s History and Heritage With the Power of the Internet, will address the workshop on the use of “Deaf School Records.” Crow is webmaster of Deafbiographies.com and conducted genealogical research at the Ohio School for the Deaf in Columbus, where her son is a student.
Following the workshop, a family history regional conference for the deaf will be held for Church members and friends on Sunday, 25 June 2006, in the Little Theater at the Conference Center. Latter-day Saints who meet in Utah wards and branches for the deaf have been invited to attend. Conference speakers will include general authorities, full-time missionaries and full-time staff of the Family History Library.
