The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in collaboration with the organization Construyendo Esperanzas, announced a significant donation on Friday, December 6, 2024, to improve access to drinking water and food security for families in the community of Itztazacuala, in the municipality of Metztitlán, Hidalgo, Mexico.
Rainwater harvesting systems and wastewater treatment systems will be built, along with family gardens. The donation will provide access to sanitary drinking water. These initiatives will enable 30 families (about 270 individuals) to have clean and safe water in their homes while also providing a sustainable food source from the family garden.
“We come into communities where people want to move forward and want a better future for their children,” said Kenia Montiel Pimintel, founder of Construyendo Esperanzas.
For years, the community of Itztazacuala has faced potable water shortages and a lack of proper sanitation, which has led to health issues and limited development opportunities. These new rainwater harvesting systems represent a long-term solution ensuring families have a constant supply of clean water for their basic needs.
“The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints joins in solidarity as a community of faith with Construyendo Esperanza,” said Yufen García, a local leader of the Church. “The Church supports projects that promote the sustainability of communities and the self-sufficiency of individuals.”
With the support of the Church of Jesus Christ, Construyendo Esperanzas will implement a comprehensive project that includes:
- Rainwater harvesting systems: Each of the 30 beneficiary families will have a 20,000-liter storage tank, ensuring access to clean water throughout the year.
- Gray water treatment: Systems will be built to treat domestic wastewater, thus reducing environmental impact and promoting sustainable practices.
- Family gardens: 30 gardens will be established to enable families to grow their own food, improving their nutrition and economy.
- Community tank: A 100,000-liter storage tank will be built to ensure a steady water supply for the entire community.
This project will bring numerous benefits to the community of Itztazacuala, including improved health, food security, community development and sustainable solutions. The project will also include family and community training on water management, good hygiene practices and healthy eating.
