Handel’s ‘Messiah,’ by The Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square

Messiah

For many people around the world, listening and even singing along to George Frideric Handel’s beloved Messiah is a favorite Easter tradition, especially when it’s performed by The Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square.

And even though COVID-19 has once again canceled the Choir and Orchestra’s live Easter concerts, on Friday, March 26, at 7:00 p.m. (mountain daylight time), people can still enjoy a previously recorded performance by the Choir and Orchestra from home.

The 2018 performance of the oratorio featured world-class guest soloists soprano Amanda Woodbury, mezzo-soprano Tamara Mumford, tenor Tyler Nelson and bass-baritone Tyler Simpson, along with organists Andrew Unsworth and Brian Mathias.

Handel’s Messiah — with lyrics that quote scriptures about the birth, life, death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ — achieved lasting success after a fundraising concert in 1749 for London’s Foundling Hospital. “Easter-time performances of Messiah continued each year at the Foundling Hospital, and Handel conducted or attended every one of them until his death in 1759,” Dr. Luke Howard wrote in the program notes.

“Handel’s Messiah is a wonderful way to celebrate the life, death and Resurrection of Christ with believers all over the world,” said Ron Jarrett, Choir president.
