The first member in Slovak Republic was Valerie Ruzena Frantiska Zizkova, born to Church members in the Czech Republic and baptized July 1939, just before the missionaries departed the country prior to World War II. Others Slovakians were later baptized as expatriates in Germany and elsewhere. The first meeting of Church members in modern times in Slovakia was held in October 1991. The first branch (a small congregation) of the Church in Slovakia was created in Trencin under the direction of President Richard W. Winder of the Czechoslovakia Prague Mission on 24 January 1993. A second branch was created later that year in Bratislava. Missionary work in the country resumed in 1992. Translation of basic Church materials into Slovak began in 1994.

In July 1999, the President of the Slovak Republic visited a newly built meetinghouse in Bratislava where he received a Czech translation of the Book of Mormon. In September of 2006, missionaries from the Czech Prague Mission traveled to Slovakia to help gather signatures for a petition to gain recognition for the Church in the country. In what Slovakian members view as a miracle, members and missionaries were able to gather 26,000 signatures in only three days. On 18 October 2006, David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve visited Slovakia and announced to the members in Trenčín that the recognition of the Church was official. In March 2013, the Book of Mormon was made available in the Slovak language.

On 29 March 2015, the first district (large congregation) in the country of Slovakia was created. In 2016, Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the First Presidency of the Church visited Slovakia. He met with members and missionaries as well as with civic leaders to discuss how the Church can assist Slovakia. During his visit, President Uchtdorf visited a care center for disabled children that has received donations of equipment from the Church, and a Romani community where the Church has helped to provide running water and sewer service
